Skizzles in Grand Marais

Grand Marais, Minnesota is the idyllic, peaceful, sleepy little town one imagines on the shore. In this case, on the shores of the inland Sea, Lake Superior.
Rumor has it that at the local senior center a dietician started the argument but who is to say, any way it seems that the subject of basic food groups was brought up and the merits of sweet rolls, donuts or cakes when Skizzles were mentioned as the out and out, hands down basic base of a sound start to the morning and why a person lives to a good old age. A little research will lead you to the World's Best Donut's shop, right on the corner in downtown Grand Marais. Now what is a Skizzle? I can't tell you. Not that I don't want to, I just can't describe a Skizzle, except to say that they are fabulous, delicious, fantastic, mouth watering great. This penny on the go'r can describe them as eight to ten inches in diameter and one half to three quarters of an inch high. Sugary? YES. Full of calories? I am sure. Filling? That depends on if you eat one or two or four or more.
You will either love them or not and many people have never ever tried one and all I can say is that I drive the five hundred plus miles round trip, at least once and as many as three times a year, with Skizzles and coffee on my mind.
Oh, of course I go to see the great water blending with the far horizon and the large volcanic rocks that I have climbed on since I was old enough to climb. The gunflint trail and the tall pines that force serenity on you. Small shops and stores that have fantastic items that are made locally and restaurants that have the best food you will find anywhere.
But Skizzles, ah, that is why I go to Grand Marais.
