Christ The Redeemer

We were able to see the Cristo Redentor Statue every night lit up brightly from almost everywhere we went in Rio de Janeiro.

It was breathtaking to be standing next to this wondrous monument and looking over the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro. But our luck was with us, it was the first Friday of the month, we were able to witness the celebration of Saint Mass at the base of Cristo Redentor before heading back to Rio de Janeiro.

Our journey began around 11:30AM on the first Friday of January, paying visit, which is inevitable when visiting Rio de Janeiro, to the Statue of Christ the Redeemer, the worlds most known image.

The electric train starts at the Cosme Velho Station and took us up the Corcovado Mountain through the Tijuca Tropical Rain Forest, we had heard we might see monkeys, sloths, snakes and other exotic wildlife but we had been to the fruit/flower stands, farmers market, that morning in Rio de Janeiro and we were so excited to see the trees with the well known fruit called Jackfruit on them and the flowers growing out of the mountain side that we didn’t focus on the wildlife.

Once at the top, almost, of Corcovado Mountain we arrived at the Cristo Redentor to several flights of stairs, not to worry they have escalators and elevators for those of us needing assistance. Finally at the top, what a sight, we couldn’t wait to get our cameras out and start taking pictures beside this tremendous Statue of Christ and then there was the spectacular view of Rio de Janeiro.
