Composting
Now is the time to start turning your compost and adding nutrients to improve it.
If you can get manure, that is like Gold for compost.
Even as early as 1900 compost was used to enrich the soil of gardens and
Vegetable beds. As a matter of record, factory-made fertilizers were in existence more than a hundred years ago but then, as now, there also natural ones that many gardeners used. Standard advice usually given was “Fertilize liberally before plowing or harrowing”.
The three important elements of fertilizer were well understood back then. The Farmer Seed Company’s catalog stated: “Nitrogen produces early, rapid, and succulent growth of plan. Potash hardens plant growth and throws the vigor into fruit or flower. Phosphoric acid aids in nutrition , influences maturity and color. Lime releases inert plan floods, rendering them available for feeding roots.
I met an old gardener who grew everything and was usually first and biggest in produce.
He used the old standard 10-10-10 3 times a year, on Memorial Day, Fourth of July and
Again on Labor Day. His gardens were AWESOME.
I am currently using Miracle Gro and Miracle Muracid for my pines. Both are proving successful and will advise this year as I just started with them last year.
